Max Scherzer, winner of the 2013 MLB Cy Young award while pitching for the Detroit Tigers, gave his former catcher, Brayan Pena, a belated thank-you gift of a Rolex watch for his help.

If you ever happen to pull Detroit Tigers ace Max Scherzer in a secret Santa draw, you might want to expect to wait on your gift. Scherzer won the 2013 Cy Young award nearly a year ago, but apparently just got one of his catchers, Brayan Pena, a thank-you gift for his help:

Award-winning pitchers certainly aren’t required to give their catchers any sort of a gift, but this is a classy gesture from Scherzer, even if it’s belated (and we’re assuming Scherzer also gave his other catcher, Alex Avila, a little something, too). But in fairness to Scherzer, maybe he figured he’d see Pena at some point during the season?

Pena signed with the Cincinnati Reds last offseason as part of a two-year contract, so there’s a chance Scherzer just didn’t get to see him during the season, and would have preferred to deliver the watch in person. Or maybe Scherzer, who is set to be a free agent this offseason, was distracted last spring by contract extension talks with the Tigers, which were ultimately fruitless, and simply forgot to mail a Rolex. Whatever the case is, Pena has it now, and you can bet he can tell Scherzer the next time he’s late for something.
