Lovie Smith Says Bucs’ Trades Give Them Best Chance To Win

Tampa Bay Bucs head coach Lovie Smith insists it’s the former. After a trade that saw starting safety Mark Barron get shipped to the St. Louis Rams, many were left scratching their heads. Mostly because the Bucs are the proud owners of the NFL’s worst defense and carried a landfill-fresh record of 1-6 before the move was made on Tuesday.

Most would take that as Smith having the Eye of Sauron on the future of the franchise while sacrificing this season like a chicken at a voodoo ritual, however, Smith disagrees:

"“The move we made gave us the best chance to win right now,” Lovie Smith told the Tampa Bay Times. “Yeah, we picked up draft picks on both of those players — moved up on one and picked up (picks) on the other. But no, it’s not about the future. Yeah, it’s always about the future, but it’s about our current roster. As I said, you don’t trade players unless you feel pretty good about the other players you have.”"

No matter how many times you read that, you always walk away with your eyes crossed. Although Lovie Smith is doing his best to temper the trade that sent the team’s best (by a long shot) defensive player packing for a Rams’ fourth and sixth round pick, this is still a hard sell for Bucs fans. He also made the move to trade linebacker Jonathan Casillas to the New England Patriots for another sixth rounder.

An already deficient Bucs’ defense just lost firepower, but, have no fear Tampa Bay fans. Lovie Smith says there’s plenty of ammo left to win right now. Apparently, spitballs count.
