Despite earlier reports, 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore has not yet retired from the NFL and will consult his family first.

The San Francisco 49ers selected Marcus Lattimore, out of South Carolina, in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft. At the time, they knew that he was not ready to contribute on the field after suffering a gruesome knee injury, and his second to date. Now, after being cleared to return to the field, it appears as though Lattimore’s career hangs in the balance.

On Sunday, reports started to surface that something was up with Lattimore. Coach Jim Harbaugh mentioned that the situation would provide more answers in the coming days.

Late Sunday night and into early Monday morning, news started to circulate that in fact, Marcus Lattimore would retire. Now Matt Barrows of The Sacaramento Bee is reporting it’s not quite a done deal.

Considering playing football is all Marcus Lattimore has been working towards the past two years, retirement has to be an incredibly tough thing to come to grips with. Despite tearing his knee apart, wanting to get back on the field has had him rehabbing countless hours in hopes of achieving that goal.

At this point though, should things not be in the best interest of his long term health, it only makes sense for Lattimore to hang up his cleats.

He was once one of the best running backs in the SEC, consistently putting the on a show for the Gamecocks fans. In an instant, an injury took that away from him, and his body has not been the same since.

Look for a final decision to come from Marcus Lattimore in the coming days.
