Aaron Sorkin, creator of “The West Wing” and writer of The Social Network, said never say never, but he believes he wrote the last three episodes of television in his career when he wrote the final episodes of HBO’s ‘The Newsroom’ in May.

Aaron Sorkin said he thinks he’s done writing for television after writing the final episodes of HBO’s ‘The Newsroom,’ which begins its third and final season tonight, and while he admitted never to say never, he said he was pretty sure the final three episodes would be his last in TV.

“I’ve loved every minute I’ve spent in television,” Sorkin said. “And I’ve had much more failure, as traditionally measured, than success in television. I’ve done four shows, and only one of them was ‘The West Wing.'”

Sorkin mentioned he was unsure if ‘The Newsroom,” starring Jeff Daniels as cable news anchor Will McAvoy, should return after its second season, but once he had determined a story line for season three, he asked HBO for it to be the last year of the show.

Sorkin has had his share of outright failures on television, with his ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip’ cancelled by NBC after a season and while ‘Sports Night’ has its fans, it only lasted two seasons on ABC.

Perhaps Sorkin shouldn’t judge his successes and failures by how long his shows run; ‘The Newsroom’ has had its faults, but there’s value in a solid show not trying to milk the characters for all they might be worth.

Sorkin’s next project is a Steve Jobs biopic, and Michael Fassbender is in talks to replace Christian Bale, who dropped out, as the Apple co-founder.
