2K Sports has entered the next generation of gaming with WWE 2K15 and it’s a rollercoaster ride from turnbuckle to turnbuckle.

The world of wrestling video games has been around for as long as I can remember. Way back on the days of the PlayStation 2, few games were more gratifying to play with a buddy than those in which you could hop off a ladder and clobber your friends character with a chair. Fast forward to today, and John Cena is ready to enter the ring in the next generation of gaming.

In the leap to the next generation, WWE 2K15 was looking to take advantage of the prowess that both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have to offer under the hood. Considering the game was already impressive on the previous generation, the improvements shouldn’t have been expected to be that drastic. Fortunately for gamers, 2K Sports hits in some areas while it misses in others.

On the graphical side, be prepared to see some of the most impressive character visuals to date. Your favorite WWE superstars are well represented and well rendered. Arenas feel lifelike and the presentation walking into the ring is top notch. Unfortunately, stars like The Rock and CM Punk appear much like their previous generation counterparts as they were not available for new visual captures.

While the stars that do make their way to the ring look impressive, it is also somewhat disheartening that the roster has been cut down some. Although the PlayStation 4 version boasts plenty of superstars, there have definitely been a few unfortunate omissions.

The lengthiest portion of the gameplay comes in the MyCareer mode. 2K Sports takes your created character through a story driven journey in WWE 2K15. While the storyline includes plenty of great matches and feuds with other real world WWE wrestlers, the unfortunate reality is that it feels somewhat of a drag.

MyCareer will take you roughly 10 hours, and although some of the portions feel like they are ready for the spotlight, the experience as a whole is more rinse and repeat than anything.

Coming to character customization, 2K Sports has made a significant amount of noise in regards to the editor for your character. The customization suite has plenty of nice options, but it does feel like there could be a bit more. Looking to customize your perfect WWE superstar left me feeling like the options I was hoping for were cut a bit short.

Differentiating between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of WWE 2K15 come in the form of human wrestlers allowed to participate. While both versions can account for 12 players on screen, the Xbox One allows for six human players while the PlayStation 4 can only support four.

In conclusion, 2K Sports has a beautifully looking game in WWE 2K15, that doesn’t quite deliver on all fronts. While the gameplay is solid and the graphical presentation is top notch, there is more than enough to be desired when it comes to the offerings in terms of customization and replayability. Nonetheless, WWE 2K15 is a solid first entry into the next generation of wrestling games.
