Mark Cuban has invested in a cool new toy for his Dallas Mavericks

Mark Cuban installed new high-resolution cameras in the rafters of the American Airline Center where his Dallas Mavericks play their home games.  While this doesn’t sound all too exciting, these new cameras will be a technological breakthrough for Basketball.

More from Dallas Mavericks

These cameras are able to take an image captured, freeze it and turn it around 360 degrees so it can be viewed from any angle.  Similar cameras are being used in the NFL.  If you’ve watched an NFL game this season and seen them freeze the video all except only two players, these cameras are the same technology.

Cuban says the cameras can also take any image collected and view it to see what the player actually sees himself.

“For example, right at the jump ball, what does Tyson (Chandler) see? It literally recreates that perspective,” Cuban said, via the Dallas Morning News.  “If the ball goes out of bounds and you want to see who touches it, you’ll be able to spin the whole thing and look from any angle.

“The secret sauce is it converts (the high-resolution video) to actual data,” Cuban said. “And the double secret sauce is from that data, you can recreate any of the visuals. So from this, that is recreated into data. From using the software, you can look at it from any angle.”

Cuban is also an investor with the company freeD (Free Dimensional Video), who created these cameras.  Being an investor, he was able to be the first one to test the new cameras.  Once the testing is complete, the technology will be available for sale to the rest of the NBA teams.  However, Cuban and the Mavericks will be the only ones able to use the Technology for analytical purposes.

So, not only will Cuban be the first to use this new technology and be the only one who will be able to use it for analytical purposes to help his team, but he will be selling the cameras to the other NBA teams and making money off of them.  Can we get a nomination for troll job of the year?

This new technology will be a huge breakthrough for Basketball and will make for amazing footage while watching a Basketball game on TV.
