The Tennessee Volunteers are fighting to get bowl eligible with a win against the visiting Missouri Tigers and have resorted to some trickery to do the job.

Tennessee is serious about ending their bowl drought.

The Volunteers haven’t been to a bowl game since playing in the Music City Bowl following the 2010 season, but carried a 5-5 record into Saturday night’s game at Neyland Stadium against the Missouri Tigers.

Trailing 7-3 in the second quarter, the Vols lined up to attempt a 48-yard field goal.

But instead of Aaron Medley kicking the ball, holder Patrick Ashford (seriously, he’s listed on the roster as “H” for “holder”) threw a nifty pass to a wide-open Alex Ellis, a reserve tight end who serves as an outside blocker in the formation, for a 31-yard touchdown.

It was the first career touchdown for Ellis, a redshirt junior from Del Mar, Del., and he was pretty darn excited about it.

So excited, in fact, that he trucked a couple of fans near the wall.

Tennessee has won two straight games to get back into the bowl picture. That followed a stretch of five losses in six games that left them 3-5 and winless in the SEC.

An overtime win at South Carolina and a blowout of rival Kentucky last week got the Vols back to .500.

Missouri has won four straight and is 8-2, 5-1 in the conference. The Tigers can clinch a second straight SEC East title by winning out against Tennessee and Arkansas.
