The No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels did not get the Battle 4 Atlantis off to a good start on Wednesday, dropping their first game of the season to Butler.

The Battle 4 Atlantis got kicked off on Wednesday afternoon, and boy did it ever get kicked off in a big way, with the No. 5 team in the country, the North Carolina Tar Heels falling to the Butler Bulldogs in the opening contest, 74-66.

Roy Williams’ North Carolina team was in pretty good shape in the first half, taking a 35-32 lead into the locker room for the half. It wasn’t the best showing from the Tar Heels this season, but this was a good Butler team they were paired up against.

In the second half, Butler proved just how good they are as they took over. The Bulldogs led by as many as 14 at one point, and despite North Carolina making an attempt at a comeback with two minutes left in the game, Butler was able to hold on and stun the Tar Heels.

Where the Bulldogs hurt the Heels the most en route to their big upset win was most certainly on the glass.

For Butler in the huge win, their leading scorer was guard Alex Barlow, who finished the game with 17 points, three assists, three steals and five rebounds. Off the bench, the Bulldogs received a big boost from freshman Kelan Martin, who dropped in 17 points with six rebounds.

With the win, Butler moves to 4-0 on the young college basketball season, and with the loss, Roy Williams’ North Carolina team drops to 3-1 and it’ll be interesting to see next Monday whether or not they stay in the top 10 of the polls.
