Mississippi State vs Ole Miss

The 111th meeting between the two in-state rivals has a lot riding on this edition of the Egg Bowl as Mississippi State can advance to the SEC Championship Game with a win against Ole Miss and a loss from Alabama. The Rebels enter the game having lost three straight SEC games and were eliminated in the conference race so they’ll look to play spoiler and win their second straight Egg Bowl from Oxford.

Keys to Victory

Ole Miss enters this game having lost three of their last four games and three straight SEC games, including last week’s 30-0 loss at Arkansas that eliminated the Rebels from contention for the SEC West division title, so they’ll look to play spoiler against their in-state rivals in the Egg Bowl.

The health of quarterback Bo Wallace monitors our attention through Saturday as he had to leave the loss against Arkansas with a sprained ankle. He’s going to play, but if his mobility is limited that will hurt his ability to get out of the pocket and pick up first downs with his feet as well as avoid the Bulldog pass rush.

Ole Miss need their No. 1 scoring defense to play like they did in September and in October when they allowed 50 points in their first four league games, going 3-1, to spoil what has been a dream season for Mississippi State.

That defense led by Robert Nkemdiche needs to pressure Prescott and force him into early throws where their dominant secondary led by Senquez Golson and Cody Prewitt can get in position to add their interception totals.

After being the Heisman front-runner in October after, Prescott has cooled off a bit and has thrown five interceptions to only three touchdowns in his last two SEC games before a three touchdown performance in a rout against Vanderbilt.

Mississippi State needs to continue what they’ve done all year long and play opportunistic defense, pick up clutch third downs on offense with Prescott and running back Josh Robinson and they should be in position to stay alive for a berth in the SEC Championship Game depending on what happens in the Iron Bowl. State needs Alabama to lose to Auburn to win the West.

Prediction

This will be the 111th meeting between the two schools with Ole Miss holding a 61-43-6 lead in the rivalry, but Mississippi State has won four of the last five Egg Bowl’s, including last year’s 17-10 game when an injured Prescott came off the bench and led the Bulldogs to the overtime win, the first game to go to overtime in this rivalry game.

Ole Miss did win the last time the game was played in Oxford and the opportunity to keep their rivals out of the SEC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff should be the emotional lift they need after playing so poorly last week to make this another exciting finish.

In the end, I like what Prescott and Josh Robinson bring to the offense for the Bulldogs and make one more play than a Rebel offense who comes in with a hobbled Wallace, no Laquon Treadwell at wide receiver and an offense that couldn’t get anything going against Arkansas, so I think they’ll be challenged against the No. 11 scoring defense of Mississippi State more than the Bulldogs will be against the No. 1 Rebels defense.

Final Score: Mississippi State: 21, Ole Miss: 20
