Anaheim Ducks are prepared to send John Gibson to the AHL for the remainder of the season

Well… I don’t want to say I called this about a month ago, but…

More from Anaheim Ducks

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, it’s likely that the Anaheim Ducks will reassign netminder John Gibson to the AHL once he returns from a groin injury; LeBrun claims the team will instead go with veteran netminder Ilya Bryzgalov as backup to Frederik Andersen.

Bryzgalov was signed on by the team to a professional tryout contract early Wednesday morning; his tryout came right on the heels of the St. Louis Blues snapping up the other highly touted free agent goaltender, Martin Brodeur. Although he has not been inked to an official contract yet, that is looking like the most likely case.

Gibson, who only turned 21 this past summer, wowed the team during his impressive playoff run — which was a large factor in the team losing veteran netminder Jonas Hiller, who signed with the Calgary Flames in the off-season.

Bryzgalov, the league’s favorite universe muser and feel-good interviewee, is no stranger to Anaheim; he spent his first years in the NHL with the franchise before eventually being picked up by the Arizona Coyotes off waivers. Considering Gibson has already spent a few games with the Norfolk Admirals to work on his development, adding Bryzgalov and saving Gibson for a later season might be the best course of action for this Pacific Division powerhouse.

Of course, the league has a couple teams that have been struggling in net as of late… this swap-out of backups could signal Gibson might be headed elsewhere.

Prior to getting injured, Gibson was 2-2-0 in his first four games with Anaheim, posting a .927 SV% and averaging 2.28 GAA.
