Alabama wasted little time imposing their will on the underdog Tigers as they strolled down the field on the game’s opening possession with T.J. Yeldon capping a 10-play, 68 yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to put Alabama on top where they would be for the duration of the game.

Yeldon’s rushing touchdown would be the lone score of the opening quarter but the second quarter began with a play that would shift the complexion of the entire game as Blake Sims connected with DeAndrew White for a 58-yard touchdown and took a late hit from Missouri defensive end Shane Ray who was ejected for targeting.

Ray entered the SEC Championship Game leading the SEC in sacks and tackles for loss and after taking two steps after Sims delivered the ball, he was out of the game at the 11:48 mark of the second quarter.

Missouri couldn’t get much going offensively in the first half but they managed to get on the scoreboard with a 33-yard field goal from Andrew Beggett to cut the deficit to 11, but on the ensuing possession Sims would direct Alabama on a 14-play, 75 yard drive that took 5:43 off the clock and resulted in Yeldon getting his second rushing touchdown in the game to put Alabama up 21-3.

Nick Saban has a 35-0 record when leading by at least 18 points in his tenure at Alabama, but credit Gary Pinkel’s team for coming out strong in the second half and making a game of it in the third quarter.

Maty Mauk did his best Johnny Manziel impression as the Missouri quarterback connected on a 63-yard pass with Jimmie Hunt that somehow managed to find its way in the hands of Hunt and led to a Bud Sasser touchdown on fourth down to give the Tigers hope.

Mauk did it again as he and Hunt connected for another improbable catch, this time for a 47-yard gain to get Missouri in position to cut the lead, but Missouri had to settle for another field goal from Beggett to cut Alabama’s lead down to 21-13 and make it a one-possession game.

That hope quickly diminished once the fourth quarter began and just like Alabama did last week in the Iron Bowl against Auburn opened the quarter with three unanswered touchdowns to put Missouri away and win the 23rd SEC Championship in program history.

Sims tossed his second touchdown of the game as he hit Christion Jones from six yards out on the first play of the final quarter to take a 28-13 lead. Jones had three catches for 40 yards in the game.

Derrick Henry got in the scoring action with a pair of touchdowns to put the game well out of reach and add some “style points” as Alabama looks to maintain their No. 1 ranking entering the playoffs. The first came on a 26-yard touchdown run and the last one coming at the 3:38 mark in to make it a 42-13 game.

Henry finished with a career-high 141 rushing yards on 20 carries and the two touchdowns. Yeldon finished with 47 yards and the two touchdowns on 14 carries but took a back seat to Henry who took advantage of a tired and abused Missouri front that was without their best player.

Record-breaking receiver Amari Cooper had 10 catches in the first half to set a record for receptions in the first half of an SEC Championship Game and that was just the first of three records he would break on the day. Cooper finished with 12 catches for 83 yards to set the SEC Championship Game record for receptions and broke Jordan Matthews’ SEC single-season reception record with 115 catches now on the season.

The player of the game however was Blake Sims who was 23-of-27 on the day with 262 yards and two touchdowns.
