Herschel Walker is one of college football’s greatest running backs of all-time and his words of advice to Wisconsin running back and Heisman finalist Melvin Gordon helped him along his journey as one of the best in college football.

When Herschel Walker was at Georgia there was no running back in college football who was as dominant as he was during his three years with the Bulldogs. He arguably should have won the Heisman Trophy as a true freshman, but lost to George Rogers, only to win the Trophy as a junior in his final season in Athens.

Walker may have seen a little of himself in Wisconsin’s record-breaking running back Melvin Gordon who drew inspiration from Walker who encouraged him and said he could be even better than the 1982 Heisman winner.

Gordon took those words of encouragement and had one of the best seasons of all-time for a running back, rushing for 2,336 yards and 26 touchdowns to lead the nation in both categories. His pinnacle moment came when he ran for 408 yards in only three quarters against Nebraska earlier this year.

He has one more game to chase another Heisman winner in Barry Sanders who holds the single-season rushing record with 2,628 yards and he’ll get that chance in the Outback Bowl against Auburn.
