Drew Stanton took over at the quarterback position for the Arizona Cardinals following a torn ACL for Carson Palmer. He had performed well early on in the season when Palmer was down with another injury, and many expected him to be able to step into the starting role and help lead the Cardinals towards the number one overall seed in the NFC.
Unfortunately for Arizona, Stanton suffered a knee injury of his own. He has a small tear in his ACL, but the Cardinals are currently expecting to see him return for the playoffs if things go according to plan.
"Initially, the Cardinals believed he had fully torn the ACL, which had been repaired in 2007, but an MRI revealed a Grade 2 sprain, which is a partial tear. With successful rehab and a knee brace, Stanton has a realistic chance of returning four weeks from the injury — meaning he could be back for the playoffs, especially if Arizona secures a first-round bye, which is within reach for the 11-3 Cardinals."
Stanton didn’t play as well as many expected him to when Palmer went down with the torn ACL, but he gives them a much better chance to win than either Logan Thomas or Ryan Lindley does.
So far this season, Stanton has thrown for 1,711 yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions. He has done a solid job of managing games when he has been on the field, and has made some big throws down the field as well. There is no denying his arm strength, and his accuracy is good as well.
The Cardinals will need good quarterback play if they want to make it anywhere in the playoffs. They are going to have to face quality football teams in each game, and having to play with a third-string quarterback that has no experience isn’t a good thing at all. It’s a good possibility that they don’t win the number one seed now that Stanton is out, with the Green Bay Packers playing extremely good football.
