The University of Michigan is proceeding with the assumption that theirs is a coveted head coaching gig in college football, and they will apparently target a number of NFL head coaches for their vacancy.

Look, I understand where the Michigan Wolverines are coming from. Their football head coaching gig is a dream job for many. But man, the lack of contextual understanding in their current coaching search is baffling.

Shooting for big names is one thing, but a report of NFL head coach targets for the Wolverines ventures into the territory of delusion. Besides Jim Harbaugh, who is at least on his way out in San Francisco, Michigan appears to believe they can pluck NFL coaches away from situations where they have job security already.

Jason La Canfora reports that Michigan is targeting Sean Payton, Doug Marrone, and Jason Garrett, among others, in their search:

"Michigan has maintained a desire to land Harbaugh’s brother, John, as well, sources said, but the Ravens coach has made it clear he has no interest in leaving Baltimore. Other NFL coaches on the school’s radar include New Orleans’ Sean Payton, Buffalo’s Doug Marrone and Dallas’ Jason Garrett (who is expected to sign an extension with the Cowboys shortly after the season)."

Oh yea, John Harbaugh too, because why not?

Presumably the conversations with these coaches are pretty brief, if they exist at all, because the coaches will all be coming off seasons in which they were in the playoff hunt. But hey, that’s big time college football for you. You go for the biggest names out there, right?

Or, in Michigan’s case in recent seasons, that’s “big time” college football for you.
