Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux was cut by the skate of Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk, but avoided a serious injury.

There’s good news and bad news for Philadelphia Flyers star Claude Giroux.

The good news is he’s probable to play Saturday after sustaining a scary injury on Friday night. The bad news is he’s going to need a new hockey sock after it was sliced by the skate of Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk when the two collided on Friday night.

You can check out the collision and its aftermath below.

“I’m not a doctor or anything but I’m pretty sure I got lucky there,” Giroux told CSN Philadelphia. “I don’t know to say. I know I got lucky. It was pretty scary.”

We’ve seen this kind of collision before and it ended the season of Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson at the time. There’s little one can do when legs get tangled along the board, which is why it’s critical that Giroux was wearing Kevlar socks intended to shield hockey players from the worst of a collision with an opposing skate blade.

It was likely because of those Kevlar socks that Giroux can think about playing Saturday instead of having season-ending injury. Giroux admitted as much to CSN.

“[They] helped me a little bit,” he said of the socks. “I knew I got hit and I tried to put pressure on it and it was pretty weird. It didn’t feel really good. I kinda panicked a little bit. The doctors did a pretty good job. I’m lucky they were there … Everyone saw blood, they kinda panicked and I didn’t help the cause by panicking  … I didn’t know what was going on down there. I panic a lot.”

While their first thoughts were certainly with Claude Giroux and his health, the Flyers could hardly think of life without their star center. Giroux has taken his customary place atop the team’s scorers, currently ranking second on the team and fourth in the league with 43 points in 38 games.

Given Philadelphia tenuous position in the league standings, it’s fair to assume their season would have taken a major hit if they’d lost Giroux to a sliced Achilles tendon. Fortunately, they’ve avoided such speculation, leading some to wonder when these Kevlar socks will become mandatory across the league.

The Flyers visit the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night to complete an eight-game road trip in which the team has lost its last four games.
