WWE no longer numbering WrestleMania

The WWE is said to be no longer numbering the “Granddaddy of Them All,” WrestleMania.

In just about every recurring event and/or theme in the world, there is a number or a date placed at the end to signify which year and/or event this was in the sequence. The same thing can be said about movie sequels; at least the ones that aren’t given subtitles.

Keeping all of this in mind, it would seem completely logical that an event as massive as WrestleMania, which has long been referred to as the “Granddaddy of Them All,” would fall under the same category as it has for over thirty years, right?

Well…as Bad News Barrett would put it, “We’ve got some bad news for you.” According to F4WOnline.com (via Wrestle Inc.) it would seem as if the WWE has elected to discontinue numbering subsequent WrestleMania events and instead use some sort of symbol to identify the specific event.

Wait…what? You must be kidding, right? Unfortunately, we are not.

"“It was announced last week that WrestleMania will come to AT&T Stadium in Texas on April 3, 2016 and “32” is nowhere to be seen on the logo. It instead features a star to represent the “Lone Star State.” On top of that, the logo for this year’s WrestleMania features a “Play” button. to represent Silicon Valley, which is near Levi’s Stadium, in Santa Clara, California.”"

Just wait…that’s not even the best part. According to the report, it is being said that the change is being made because Vince McMahon feels that numbering the events “makes it sound too old.”

Take that one in for a second…we’ll wait right here.

Our biggest issue with this is that the WWE has always prided itself on tradition. In the beginning of just about every show we see the world “Then. Now. Forever.” come across the screen. The last time I checked, you can’t have a tradition without something getting “older” as time moves on.

There have been many people, both inside the wrestling business and fans alike, who feel that Vince McMahon has lost touch with the wrestling community. This is certainly not going to help change people’s minds very much.

In fact, his reported claim that the numbering of WrestleMania “makes it sound too old” has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Do you see the National Football League discontinuing numbering the Super Bowl just because they’ve almost reached the half-century point? We think not.

There are times in this world where you just have to shake your head, quietly laugh, and back away slowly. This is one of those times.

What do you think of the potential use of symbols to signify WrestleMania instead of the traditional numbering system? Do you think Vince McMahon is out of touch with the wrestling community? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
