The New York Knicks are in a bad place this year but they could be hitting the jackpot with reported interest from Kevin Durant.

The New York Knicks season ended almost as soon as it started but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a ton of hope for the future. Phil Jackson may be running a bad franchise now but he’s cleared up a ton of money for the future and that money might be allocated towards bringing in the reigning MVP to New York.

According to a report from Frank Isola at the New York Daily News, Durant has confided in those close to him that he’s open to signing with the New York Knicks when he hits free agency in 2016.

"“No question about it,” says a person close to Durant. “Kevin loves Carmelo (Anthony). It could work in New York. But never rule out the Thunder.”"

Of course, the Oklahoma City Thunder have first crack at bringing Durant back, as a contract extension could be worked out before the pending free agency date arrives in a year’s time. There is also the notion that Durant could head East, but land in Washington and not New York as he’d be returning to his hometown team that happens to be on the rise in the Eastern Conference.

The Knicks are going to be after some top free agents in the coming years, but with Rajon Rondo likely staying in Dallas and both LeBron James and Kevin Love staying in Cleveland, the options already aren’t looking all that great for 2015. But 2016 is when Kevin Durant is slated to hit free agency and bringing him into New York could be huge for the team.

There’s absolutely no guarantee that Durant is going to be lured in by the Knicks, but just the idea that he could come to the Big Apple is something that might inspire Knicks fans to hang on during the tough times as the future appears to be bright, at least in theory.
