Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman could potentially miss the Super Bowl if his baby is born on Sunday during the Super Bowl

Days ago, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman announced in an editorial for Peter King’s MMQB and Sports Illustrated that he and his girlfriend are expecting their child to be born next week, but Sherman could have a big decision to make if the baby comes early.

In an interview with ESPN, Sherman opened up about his plan for if his baby is going to be born earlier than expected. His girlfriend, Ashley Moss, is staying in Phoenix near Sherman, and the pair have already made preparations to have the baby at a local hospital if the baby is on the way.

On Sunday, the Seahawks take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, and Sherman said he isn’t thinking about the possibility of having to choose between the birth of his son or playing in the game if the baby arrives on Sunday.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Sherman said. “We’re not thinking about the possibility.”

Obviously, from a fan’s perspective, you want Sherman to make the right decision for himself, but you also realize if Sherman doesn’t play, the Seahawks chances to win the game start to drop. Knowing what we know about Sherman, which isn’t as much as we think, I can’t imagine he would miss the game, but the birth of his first child could easily be enough to sway Sherman.

Earlier this season, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton played the same day his child was born and then gave a moving interview after the game.

Regardless of whether the baby is born before, after, or during the game, Sherman also said he’s feeling extra motivated for the game because his child is on the way.

“It’s someone that actually depends on you for everyday living,” Sherman said. “Everything they do is dependent on you and how you provide and how successful you are. As a parent, you want to set a great example for them, so I guess, to a degree, a lot of things are riding on it.”

Sherman also mentioned they have a name picked out for their son, but it’s a secret.

Based on Sherman’s past, I’m willing to rule out any variation of “Michael” or “Crabtree,” “Darelle” or “Revis,” and “Skip” or Bayless,” though.
