Orioles manager Buck Showalter signs elated fan’s shirt in spring training

The job of a baseball manager is a largely unglamorous one. You sit in a dusty dugout every day. You don’t really make the major decisions–there are no plays to call in baseball. No one ever calls the manager a “genius,” like you’d hear about Bill Belichick or Pat Riley. The job practically requires that you chew tobacco. And, as Brad Pitt showed us all in Moneyball, if the GM says you don’t matter, you really don’t matter.

There are some exceptions, and judging by this photo, the Orioles’ Buck Showalter is one of them.

Just look at that guy’s face. I’ve never seen anyone happier to be getting their shirt signed by an MLB manager. This might be the happiest moment of his life. And all because of Buck Showalter.

If any manager deserves that reaction it may well be Showalter. The Orioles endured more than a decade of futility before Buck showed up; since then, they’ve seen three winning seasons and two playoff appearances, including last year’s 96-win campaign. It’s easy to see why that guy’s smiling.

Other managers shouldn’t get their hopes up, though, as this might be a one-time situation. I can’t see anyone making that face for Matt Williams, Brad Ausmus, or Walt Weiss, to name just three. Sorry, guys.

Also, just take one more look at that guy’s face. And make it your life’s goal to be that happy, just once.
