The Chicago Blackhawks announced right wing Patrick Kane will need 12 weeks for a full recovery after undergoing surgery to repair his fractured collarbone.

Kane suffered the injury in Tuesday’s shootout win against the Florida Panthers after he was cross-checked by defenseman Alex Petrovic eight minutes into the first period. Kane, was tied for the league lead in points with Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom with 64 points and a Hart Trophy candidate at the time of the injury.

After the hit he laid on the ice for a brief period before gingerly leaving the ice and favoring his left arm/shoulder. He went to the locker room and didn’t return to the game. In his postgame press conference, coach Joel Quenneville said it looked like he’ll miss some time and that was confirmed with the release from the team Wednesday night.

“Patrick underwent successful surgery today to repair his left clavicle fracture,” Blackhawks Head Team Physician Dr. Michael Terry told the team’s website. “The procedure went very well and we anticipate a full recovery in approximately 12 weeks.”

It has been a devastating time to be a Chicago sports fan with the Chicago Bulls losing Derrick Rose for an indefinite amount of time with a torn meniscus, the same knee he tore the meniscus in last season. Losing Rose and Kane could be death blows to the championship efforts for both clubs.

The postseason begins in seven weeks, so if Kane is to play again this season he’ll need his teammates to pick up the slack and have an extended run to at least the Western Conference Finals for a slim chance he could make an appearance.

Although, that is likely optimistic thinking at this point for a team and a city in a state of mourning.
