Michael Jordan on Forbes billionaire list
By CM Towle
Former NBA superstar and current Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan makes the Forbes annual World’s Billionaires list for the first time.
Michael Jordan is pretty used to being at the top of nearly every list that contains his name. However, his inclusion in the 29th Forbes World’s Billionaires list is a first for the NBA great.
It’s not at the top, but it’s a pretty significant thing just to be included, obviously.

According to a story by ESPN, Jordan made the cut for the first time with an estimated worth of about $1 billion. That makes him the 1,741st richest person in the world.
Jordon makes about $100 million of that money per year off of the Nike Air Jordan line in the form of royalties. His business manager hasn’t confirmed those numbers so they’re just an estimate, but widely believed. In 2010, Jordan purchased an 80 percent share of the then Charlotte Bobcats for a value of $275 million. His share went to 89 percent in 2013 and the franchise is now estimated to be worth over $700 million.
Unsurprisingly, the new Forbes list is full of sports-related figures.
The richest team owner is Steve Ballmer, who currently owns the LA Clippers after buying them last year for $2 billion. His net worth is $21.5 billion, making him the 35th richest person in the world. Ballmer’s former Microsoft colleague, Paul Allen has a net worth of $17.5 billion, good for the 51st richest person in the world.
Allen owns the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trail Blazers and is second on the list among team owners.
The third richest team owner is Phil Anschutz, who owns the LA Kings, LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo. He also owns the Staples Center. His net worth is valued at $11.8 billion. Some of the other sports owners who were in the 400 richest include Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov, Miami Heat owner Micky Arison, St. Louis Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke and the Dolans, who own the New York Knicks and Rangers.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was near the bottom at 393 with a net worth of $4.1 billion.
