Rangers right-hander and would-be number one starter, Yu Darvish will officially be ending his season next Tuesday when he’s set to undergo Tommy John surgery.
According to a Rangers press release tweeted by Evan Grant, the surgery will take place in Pensacola Florida and be done by Dr. James Andrews. The release goes on to say that an MRI performed on Darvish after his March 5th spring training start revealed a sprain in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Rangers physician Dr. Keith Meister recommended surgery and that opinion was upheld by Dr. David Altchek, the Mets medical director who examined Darvish in New York on March 10th.
Darvish will meet with Dr. Andrews on Monday before the surgery and after the surgery, will return to the Rangers training camp in Surprise, Arizona. From there, he’ll start on the rehab process and will continue doing so in Arlington once the regular season begins. It’s a long road to recovery for Darvish, who is not expected to be ready to start until mid-2016.
Darvish has been an All-Star in all three of his seasons since coming to the Rangers from Japan. Last season, he started out on the disabled list with neck stiffness, but only missed one start. He made 22 starts and went 10-7 in those starts with a 3.06 ERA. He last started on August 9th, 2014, before being shut down for the rest of the season with elbow inflammation. He received a clean MRI in November and expected to be healthy for this season.
The Rangers owe Darvish a base salary of $10 million this season and $10 million for next season. He is owed $11.8 million for 2017, but the only way that becomes a player option is if he wins the 2016 Cy Young Award. Pretty unlikely, since he’ll probably miss a good chunk of that season as well.
