John Fox thinks Jay Cutler’s confidence was rattled in 2014
By Ryan Ratty
John Fox believed that Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler’s down year in 2014 was because of a lack of confidence.
The Chicago Bears went in a complete 180 in 2014, and although Jay Cutler wasn’t the entire problem, the reality is that his play was subpar to say the least this past season. Even though his job is safe for now, it would be a stretch to say that Cutler is not on the hot seat as of now.

Because of their porous 2014 season, John Fox and Ryan Pace were brought in respectively as the new head coach and the new general manager. With the new regime, Cutler will look to get back to his usual self. However, Fox believes that the main reason Cutler had a down year in 2014 was because of his confidence and how it was rattled.
The Chicago Tribune met up with Cutler in Phoenix. At the NFL owners’ meetings, Fox pointed to one reason that could be the main problem for his debacle season in 2014.
"“I think maybe he got to the point where he lacked confidence a year ago. To build that back up, it’s going to take time, daily. It takes trust, like any relationship.”"
Fox also went on to say that he expects new offensive coordinator Adam Gase, who worked with Peyton Manning and Fox with the Denver Broncos, to build that relationship back up. Interestingly enough, Fox talked about Tony Romo and how success comes with confidence. Both haven’t been considered elite quarterbacks just yet, but both are usually near each other when people talk about the top quarterbacks in the league.
"“Playing defense. Playing complementary football is going to be something that helps. I liken it a little bit, not being critical, to Tony Romo. I think there had been different things said. I know Tony personally. He’s a tremendous competitor. I thought he had one of his better seasons a year ago with that same kind of build-up. With success comes confidence.”"
If Cutler can get back to playing the level he played at in 2012, which is possible considering he’s only 31 years old, it would go a long way for the Bears, as they look to get back to the playoffs in 2015.
