The Chicago Bears will be holding an open competition at quarterback. Jay Cutler will have to win the starting job out of training camp.

The Chicago Bears paid a ton of dough to Jay Cutler to keep him around for 7 years. He was expected to be the starting quarterback for the team for years and years, but after struggling through the 2014 season, Cutler now has to fight to keep his starting role. John Fox is the new head coach calling the shots for the Bears and Cutler will have to prove his value as the starter.

It’s all an open competition,” Fox said, via CSNChicago.com. “Obviously you’ve got to start somewhere and my experience in football, really in anything, it’s not where you start a competition; it’s where you finish it. But we’ve got to start the race with some kind of lineup. We have not discussed that in depth. We have not presented it to our players yet. I kind of have it in my brain and then they compete.”

Cutler will compete with Jimmy Clausen and David Fales for the starting role with the team. Clausen took the starting job away from Cutler late last season, but it would be difficult to see Cutler losing his job to Clausen to start out the season. John Fox wants to see them compete for that starting job, but Cutler likely will be the leading candidate heading into the season. The competition is there and it will be up to Cutler to take the starting job away.

In 2014, Cutler tossed the rock for almost 4000 yards and threw 28 touchdowns. He finished the season with 3812 passing yards in his 15 games. He finished the season with a 5-10 record though.

In 2013, Cutler was only able to play in 11 games, but he finished the season with 2621 passing yards and 19 touchdowns. He finished that season with a 5-6 record.

Cutler still has struggled throwing interceptions. Last season he finished the year with 18 interceptions and he was tied for the league worst with Philip Rivers. He will have to cut down on those turnovers in order to give his team a chance to win games.

Jay has to prove that he can lead the Bears to wins or he will find his seat on the bench.
