UConn has been as dominant as ever as the 34-1 Huskies look to play their way into the Elite Eight and their competition hasn’t stood much of a chance in the first two rounds with UConn beating St. Francis by 56 in the opening round and later defeating Rutgers 91-55.
Conversely, things haven’t been so easy for the Longhorns who beat No. 12 Western Kentucky by two points in their first round game to avoid the upset and got past No. 4 California in the second round by three points.
You don’t get extra points for margin of victory and the wins all count the same, but it is hard to look at the final scores in the UConn games and not get intimidated, especially when you haven’t been in this setting for 11 years.
Texas head coach Karen Aston admits it is a challenge but she hopes the schedule her team has played this year has them prepared for the challenge that awaits.
“I don’t know if I can answer how our team will react to playing Connecticut,” Aston said, via ESPN.com. “We haven’t played them in a long time. Our schedule will help us somewhat because we have seen Tennessee, Stanford, Baylor three times. I think there are some things we can reflect back on.”
UConn is playing for a third straight national championship but has to get through Texas first, and they’ll do it in a homecoming game for star Briana Stewart who won a high school title in Albany’s Pepsi Arena. Look for her to have a big game in front of her fans.
If UConn advances, Geno Auriemma will notch his 100th tournament win and join Pat Summitt(112) as the only two women’s coaches to have reached that milestone.
