The New York Jets are looking for help at the quarterback position, and are interested in signing veteran quarterback Matt Schaub.

Matt Schaub was released earlier this offseason by the Oakland Raiders after rookie quarterback Derek Carr broke out in his first season last year. There isn’t a huge market for him, but one team with some interest in signing him is the New York Jets who are in desperate need of help at the quarterback position.

As of right now, the Jets are working with just Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick as their two quarterbacks. Schaub may not end up being any better than those two, but more competition is always better. New York hasn’t had a franchise quarterback in a long time, and have had a list of short-term starting quarterbacks in Michael Vick, Mark Sanchez and so many others. It’s been so bad that the days of Chad Pennington seem like a dream from a distant era.

Schaub has seen his career go downhill incredibly fast, as he was a starting quarterback just two seasons ago with the Houston Texans. Unfortunately, since then he hasn’t found a way to prove himself to any team and wasn’t even able to beat out a rookie quarterback. At one point in time, Schaub appeared to be one of the brightest up-and-coming quarterbacks in the entire NFL.

Over the past few seasons, he simply hasn’t made the best decisions in the world, and his interception issues are what got him canned as the starter in Houston.

Now that he is 33 years old, this could very well end up being his last chance to win a starting job. The Jets are going to start whoever plays best in camp and preseason action, and Schaub certainly has a chance to beat out both Smith and Fitzpatrick.

If the Jets do end up signing Schaub, it isn’t going to be easy for him to win a starting job. That being said, he does have a chance to make some noise and get the job done.

Assuming he can keep his make the right decisions and take care of the football, Schaub might be alright in New York. It isn’t going to be an easy quarterback competition in New York, but should Schaub insert himself into that equation, he could wind up being the solution the Jets need moving forward.
