A TV station ran out of commercials during the Yankees and Red Sox extra-inning game in New York.

Since taking over for Bud Selig, the former Major League Baseball commissioner, Rob Manfred is doing everything in his power to try and limit the length of a baseball game. From talks of installing a pitching shot clock and forcing the batter to have one foot in the box at all times, baseball might be shorter because of Manfred.

But there was nothing the commissioner could have done on Friday evening as the New York Yankees hosted the Boston Red Sox. Nine innings weren’t enough to declare a winner, so the two ball clubs played a total of 19 innings lasting over 6 hours. The best part about this long game was that the TV Station who was broadcasting the game straight ran out of commercials.

Even the big business that is advertising during sporting events couldn’t make enough commercials for this particular baseball game. I guess no one was really expecting the game to go twice as long as the typical baseball game. Not even advertising agencies.

This might not be a bad thing either. Not only do the fans in the park get free baseball to watch. But also, the crowd viewing at home doesn’t have to deal with those pesky commercials in the later innings. Certainly this made the viewing experience better for everyone involved. And the Yankees nor the Red Sox made any less money off the lack of commercials after hour 6 of baseball.

I think that Rob Manfred should propose a limit to commercials in order to speed up the play even further. Without and excess of commercials, the game could be played in record time increasing fan enjoyment at home and benefiting the sport greatly.

Of course this would never happen. But fans got a taste of what this might feel like during the Boston Red Sox extra inning win over the New York Yankees.
