The San Antonio Spurs’ Patty Mills had a beautiful pull-up 3 early in the second quarter of Game 3 against the Los Angeles Clippers.

With the San Antonio Spurs looking to go ahead 2-1 in the all important third game of their first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Clippers, they got a nice boost from Patty Mills, a player who has spent much of the 2014-15 campaign just trying to get back to full health after offseason surgery.

It could be rightly said that Mills’ transition pull-up three-pointer epitomizes the new era of basketball, which the Spurs have so staunchly embraced and fluidly integrated into their schematic system. Just watch.

Mills, known as a super quick guard akin to starting point guard Tony Parker, used his incredible foot speed to pressure the defense, getting them flat-footed with the threat that he’d attack the basket.

Instead, he used his deft shooting touch to tickle the twine. In former years, pulling up for three in transition would have been considered a no-no, especially with zero offensive rebounders anywhere close to the basket.

Mills, though, took the shot confidently. The result was a furthering of a fairly commanding early lead in the ultra-important Game 3.

Even in seven-game series, the Game 3 winner in a 1-1 tie often goes onto to win the series. San Antonio needs this game.

Having the irregular contributor (at least this season) play a key role only helps their chances.
