Cavaliers cancel arm sling giveaway meant to support Kevin Love

The Cleveland Cavaliers planned an arm sling giveaway for Game 2 with the intent to show support for Kevin Love. However, they ultimately cancelled the plan.

The Cleveland Cavaliers fan giveaway on Wednesday night were small white towels. However, that was not the team’s original plan.

According to Tom Withers of the Associated Press, the Cavaliers originally intended on giving away 20,000 arm slings as a way to support Kevin Love, who is out for the remainder of the postseason with a shoulder injury.

However, the team ultimately decided against the idea and cancelled the giveaway.

Withers writes:

"The Cavaliers canceled a plan to give away 20,000 arm slings to fans to show support for injured starting forward Kevin Love, who is out for the rest of the NBA playoffs.Love underwent surgery last week after his left shoulder was dislocated when his arm was yanked from the socket by Boston center Kelly Olynyk in Cleveland’s series-clinching win in the opening round. The Cavs intended to hand out the slings, adorned with a sponsor’s name, during their Eastern Conference semifinal series against Chicago but scrapped the idea.A team spokesman would not comment on the giveaway. It’s not known what the team plans to do with the unused slings."

It’s unknown why the Cavaliers cancelled this idea, but it was probably the right move.

It’s great that the team wants to show support to Love. However, handing out 20,000 arm slings seems like a strange and unnecessary way to do so.

Ultimately, the Cavaliers found a more appropriate way to honor Love. The team showed him on the videoboard during Wednesday night’s game and the fans gave him a standing ovation.

Who knew supporting an injured player was possible without the help of 20,000 arm slings?

Love averaged 16.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and .5 blocks per game in the regular season.
