The Dallas Cowboys are open to trading their first round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft if it helps the team win now.

It hasn’t even been one week since the 2015 NFL Draft came to a close but Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager, Jerry Jones is already talking about next year’s draft.

Jones has taken an aggressive approach this offseason after letting NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray walk in free agency and sign with NFC East rival Philadelphia and the team is taking a win at all costs approach with Tony Romo’s window for a Super Bowl nearing an end.

With that in the forefront of his mind, Jones was asked if the Cowboys would part with their first round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft if it meant the team was closer to winning in 2015.

“I’d be reluctant to, but certainly if the right situation came along that could improve us now, with where we are with [Tony] Romo and his career and where we are with what we’ve put together, it’s a good time to go for it,” Jones told 105.3 the Fan in Dallas.

Reading between the lines you can guess the name that comes to mind in a possible trade is Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson who has made it clear he would prefer a change of scenery and his home state Cowboys would welcome him with open arms.

Jones couldn’t come right out and say we would trade a first round pick for Peterson because that would be tampering and he’d be punished for that. But if he is serious about trading for Peterson, all negotiations would have to start with a first rounder because the Vikings have made it clear they have no intentions of trading the perennial Pro Bowl back.

Dallas didn’t draft a running back in the Draft like many had expected them to but seem content to enter the season with free agent signee Darren McFadden as the team’s starting running back. Peterson coming to Dallas would certainly help the Cowboys win now, so sacrificing some of the future for instant gains in the present could be an ideal solution for Jones and the Cowboys who are all-in this year.

The Cowboys drafted first-round talent Randy Gregory at the bottom of the second round and on Thursday signed former LSU offensive tackle, La’el Collins who went undrafted after he had his name mentioned in a murder investigation. Collins was never a suspect in the death of his ex-girlfriend but that made NFL teams hesitant to take the chance, even if he was only guilty of knowing someone who was murdered.

Taking the chance on Gregory and Collins is one thing but their biggest roll of the dice came with the one-year deal given to Greg Hardy who is suspended for 10 games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy after he was convicted of assaulting his former girlfriend and communicating threats.
