Washington Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan could find himself in hot water after making racially insensitive comments about Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper.

Scot McCloughan recently completed his first NFL Draft as the general manager of the Washington Redskins where he made waves taking Iowa offensive lineman Brandon Scherff with the No. 5 pick.

He caught some flak from certain fans and media members who questioned the selection, which is what they do, but now McCloughan is in danger of catching more flak after making comments about Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper.

The first-year general manager made a guest appearance on 106.7 The Fan’s Grant and Danny Show, where he was asked about how the National’s slugging outfielder who recently hit three home runs in one game would fare on the football field.

McCloughan answered the question in jest bust but according to Chase Hughes of CSNWashington.com, he invoked Harper’s race in playing a role in the position he would play in football.

“Ehhhhh, probably strong safety. But, I went to a game a couple weeks ago, and he flipped his hips and caught a fly ball out in right field in the corner, and I thought, maybe (cornerback). But I’m thinking, uhh, okay, no, he’s gotta be a safety. He’s a white guy.”

Everything was fine until those last four words. I don’t think he meant any malice and he was trying to be funny in answering the hypothetical question from the hosts, intimidating a player can’t play cornerback because he’s white is going to upset some people.

For example, if he said a player couldn’t play quarterback because he is African-American, could you imagine the outcry over such ignorant and racially insensitive remarks?

The numbers will tell you that it is extremely rare to find a cornerback who is Caucasian. In fact, Jason Sehorn is the last white cornerback to play in the NFL and that was in 2004. But anytime you invoke a sensitive subject like race, you better be 100 percent politically correct in what you say otherwise be ready to feel the wrath of those offended.

In an era when words are dissected and analyzed instantaneously and often without context, McCloughan is likely going to have to offer up some sort of apology to avoid another race-related controversy with the Redskins, whose name has been a point of controversy in recent years.
