The New York Knicks drew the No. 4 pick at the NBA Draft Lottery, and they already want to trade it.

Phil Jackson was supposed to turn the New York Knicks around this offseason, as the message during the season of suck was that the future was bright. But conspiracy theories be damned — the Knicks failed to win the No. 1 pick and ended up two spots lower than they should have.

At the NBA Draft Lottery on Tuesday night, the Knicks drew the No. 4 overall pick, which is such a Knicks thing to have happened.

According to Yahoo! Sports insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Knicks are already open to trading the No. 4 pick and moving down in the draft order.

This isn’t all that surprising, as the team was rumored to be interested in moving the No. 1 pick a month ago when they had the best odds of winning it. When Tuesday night revealed that the Knicks very much didn’t win the No. 1 pick, the idea of the team trading the pick suddenly became even more obvious than it already was.

New York could double down and take someone like Frank Kaminsky or Sam Dekker, but it’s a top heavy draft that won’t produce a superstar in the lower picks for a few years. There’s no promise that the top picks in the draft will turn into superstars but they could be more ahead of players lower in the order like Kaminsky, Delon Wright and others.

Of course, the Knicks — who were threatened with potential violations for gushing over D’Angelo Russell — could end up with a top guard. There are three picks ahead of them, two top guards and two top big men. It’s expected that Kahlil Okafor and Karl Anthony-Towns will go in the Top 3 with either Russell, Emmanuel Mudiay or Willie Cauley-Stein going in the other slot.

That’s still great for the Knicks, but trading the pick for a more immediate impact performer might be the best — or only — option.
