Former Florida Panthers and New Jersey Devils coach, Peter DeBoer, has found a new home in the National Hockey League.

Peter DeBoer has found new life as a coach once again in the NHL.

After being fired by the New Jersey Devils earlier this season, DeBoer is reportedly set to become the next head coach of the San Jose Sharks, after the Sharks and Todd McLellan mutually split ways in the offseason.

It’s an interesting coaching hire by the Sharks as DeBoer has been fired by the last two teams he has coached. When he became the head coach of the Florida Panthers, he was a highly celebrated coach in the Ontario Hockey League, where he was lauded for his ability to work with and coach young players.

In Florida, he was never able to get them out of what seemed like perpetual last-place finishes or obscurity. Oddly enough, after being let go by the Panthers, he took over the reigns of the Devils, where he coached them on an impressive run through the NHL Playoffs which culminated in a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings.

They wouldn’t make the playoffs afterward. Struggling this season, New Jersey decided to fire DeBoer after 36 games. While it might not sound impressive to some, the Sharks are a team going through what appears to be a transition phase, as the old guard of Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau is getting older, while younger players like Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, Joe Pavelski and others hit their stride.

DeBoer might have faded out quickly in New Jersey, but with San Jose having some good young talent, a fresh start out west might be good for both parties.

He could certainly help his cause to show why he can be one of the better coaches in the league if he can get the Sharks back in the playoffs next season. If he goes a few seasons and struggles, then one has to wonder if he’s fit to be a head coach at this level.

Regardless of what happens, the Sharks have locked onto their target, and DeBoer is their man.
