Antonio Cromartie: Richard Sherman not among best NFL corners

Antonio Cromartie believes Richard Sherman is a product of the Seahawks defense, not an elite cornerback.

Richard Sherman is considered by many to be one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. The Seattle Seahawks cornerback certainly believes that, and it’s hard to argue with his performance on one of the league’s most feared defenses. However, some of his peers don’t see him in the same light.

New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie sounded off on Sherman in an interview with Sirius XM, saying that Sherman’s success is merely the product of the Seahawks’ defensive scheme and the fact that Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas are his safeties.

Cromartie also said of Sherman, “Go follow the number one receiver. Follow him around for a whole entire game and let’s see what you can do. Darrelle Revis has done that his whole career. I’ve done that. Patrick Peterson has done it. Joe Haden has done it.”

Cromartie is clearly referring to the fact that Sherman primarily stays on one side of the field as opposed to following around the opposing team’s top wide receiver.

Cromartie had more on the subject, saying that Sherman will say that he doesn’t have to do that because he trusts the rest of his defensive backs. Cromartie continued, “That’s not the point. If you’re going to consider yourself the best, do what the best do. They follow around the best.”

The debate between Revis and Sherman as the best cornerback in the NFL is one that has been tossed around quite a bit over recent years in the league. It’s also shouldn’t come as a surprise that Cromartie, who is now teammates with Revis once again in New York, is in support of Revis in the matter.

However, what’s curious about Cromartie’s comments is that he’s going far beyond saying that Revis is better than Sherman and going as far as to say that Sherman isn’t even worthy of consideration as a top-two or even top-five corner in the league. That, by almost any measure of looking at the Sherman-Revis debate, seems like a bit of a stretch.

Given what we’ve seen from Sherman and his outspoken nature in the past, it’d be surprising if a rebuttal from the Seahawks corner wasn’t already in the works.

Even though they wouldn’t be on the field at the same time, it’s a shame the Seahawks and Jets don’t meet at any point in the 2015 NFL season. That would surely mean fireworks that any NFL fan would want to see.
