As is the case every year, there are a lot of stories to watch during the NBA Free Agency period, and one of the most intriguing this summer is the saga between the Miami Heat and Dwyane Wade. Recently opting out of his contract to test the free agency waters, there’s a good chance that the face of the Heat franchise could be playing elsewhere this upcoming season.
But, there is also still the chance the Heat could keep him around for the long haul to end his career in Miami, but if they’re going to make that happen then they’re apparently going to have to pony up big time. According to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski, Wade is indeed seeking a max contract from the team if he’s going to end his storied career where he began it.
This puts the Heat and Pat Riley in a really interesting position. At 33 years old and having battled injuries throughout his career, they really need to sit back and wonder whether or not paying Wade would be a viable investment in the end. You can argue both sides when it comes to this, but when you’re done the cons might actually outweigh the pros. Not to mention the team just got a steal in the NBA Draft with the selection of guard Justise Winslow, so they could also take the gamble of letting Wade walk and hoping Winslow lives up to the expectations that have been set for him.
If that ends up being the case, then there will certainly be a team out there that will be willing to pay Wade what he’s looking for, most notably the Los Angeles Lakers.
Whatever the case ends up being, this saga between Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat seems to be getting mighty interesting now.
