NBA Free Agency officially opened at midnight tonight, and the New Orleans Pelicans wasted absolutely no time in getting together with All-Star Anthony Davis to work out a new deal.

New Orleans has a new head coach, a new system in place and a new contract for their star player.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo! Sports, the Pelicans and Anthony Davis have agreed to the framework of a max contract extension worth $145 million.

"New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward Anthony Davis has reached agreement on a maximum five-year extension that could be worth in excess of $145 million, a league source told Yahoo Sports."

The Pelicans are hoping to bounce back from a first-round playoff exit this past season and take the leap forward the franchise looks ready to take. Davis isn’t just central to that plan taking place, he’s the face of the franchise moving forward and the next big superstar in the NBA.

So many people have stock invested in Davis, and this $145 million extension is proof that no one has as much invested than the Pels. If Davis flames out in 2015-16, it’s going to hurt all of basketball but it will hurt New Orleans the most — and in more than just their pocketbook.

The chances of that happening are low though, as while superstars seem prone to injuries these days, there’s a lot of hope that the Pelicans new $145 million man can carry the franchise in a way that only Chris Paul was able to before him.
