For the first time in nearly a decade there is a new champion of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Reigning champion Joey Chestnut, gunning for a ninth consecutive title, was upended by Matt Stonie.

Stonie placed second in last year’s contest by gobbling 56 dogs to Chestnut’s 63. This time he was out for blood, downing 62 dogs to the champ’s 60.

Ever since knocking off Takeru Kobayashi in 2007, Chestnut had been untouchable. He reclaimed the throne, put America back on the map after seven years of Japanese dominance, and brought the title back home. Following his defeat, Twitter lost its collective mind.

It’s the dawning of a new era in American sports.
