Given all the uncertainty surrounding his injured knee, not many people believed that rookie running back Todd Gurley would be starting training camp on the St. Louis Rams’ active roster. After the Rams drafted Gurley in the first round of the NFL Draft a few months ago, head coach Jeff Fisher stated that Gurley could take as long as he wants, as they wanted him at full health before he hits the field.
Well, apparently the health is just fine. On Tuesday it was a announced that Gurley had passed all the necessary tests and will start his rookie season in 2015 on the Rams’ active roster in training camp.
This is definitely good news, but again, it’s also a little surprising. The Rams were keeping pretty tight-lipped about his progress with the knee and most expected the former Georgia star to begin the year on that non-football injury list. But that’s not the case, and now he can get right to work.
Now we can get a pretty early look of how he and Tre Mason mesh together in the backfield. With the drafting of Gurley this past spring, Fisher made it pretty evident that he’s going for a nice 1-2 punch behind the quarterback, which could open up a plethora of possibilities for the St. Louis offense.
How that backfield meshes together remains to be seen, but we’re going to find out soon when training camp gets underway for the Rams.
