The Miami Dolphins will turn back the clock to 1966 one game this upcoming season, as they plan to sport throwback jerseys during the December 14 contest against the New York Giants. The game is a primetime, Monday Night Football matchup and, according to Miami, will be the first time the franchise has ever worn throwbacks at home.
According to the franchise, the uniforms are a callback to the inaugural AFL Dolphins team that held its first ever game on September 2, 1966 (a 23-14 loss to the Oakland Raiders).
Miami’s jerseys will be predominately aqua, while the pants will be white. Along the sides of the shoulders are thick orange and white stripes, each outlined by a thin aqua line. White numbers, outlined in orange, will sit atop each shoulder pad, with the same color pattern adorning players’ chests and backs. Three stripes – orange flanked by aqua – will run vertically along the outseam of players’ pants.
The team’s lids will be white and shall feature the iconic dolphin wearing a football helmet logo.
As far as throwbacks go, it’s a sleek look for the Dolphins. Given their color scheme and relative timelessness the threads are much more subdued than other throwbacks such as, say, the Steelers’ bumblebee look – a definite nod to the team’s fashion-forwardness in the 60s.
Below is a hype video – a bit of a then and now teaser, if you will – for the December 14 unis.
