The debacle of the New York Mets not getting Carlos Gomez was caused by injury concerns.

Everything about the New York Mets on Wednesday night leading up to the MLB Trade Deadline was a lesson in how not to handle affairs. Reports of a done deal sending Carlos Gomez to the Mets were everywhere. Shortstop Wilmer Flores was also kept in the game as the trade involving him seemed completed, leading to him crying while on the field.

Twitter had a bit of fun at the expense of the failed trade and the Mets organization in general. As talks of the Mets incompetence were waning later in the night, though, things started to become clearer. Most importantly, the primary reason for the trade falling through has come to light. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that it was injury concerns regarding Gomez’ hip that kept the deal from getting done in the end:

If that’s the full reason, then there is at least some logic as to why the deal didn’t wind up going through. However, it doesn’t excuse the Mets letting reports of a done deal getting out as the injury concerns wouldn’t be a breaking news type of development. It also doesn’t excuse leaving Flores in the game when he was supposedly being dealt.

While reports of Gomez’s hip issue shines a slightly more favorable light on the matter, the Mets still come out of this deserving of negative attention. This was handled unfathomably poorly and is yet another reason why the Mets often earn being viewed as the butt of jokes.
