NBA free agency is dying way down now that we’re in the dog days of August, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still some talented players on the market drawing interest. J.R. Smith is still without a contract after he mind numbingly rejected $6.4 million from the Cavaliers — which is about $5.4 million more than he’ll probably get this season.

Sticking in the Eastern Conference, the New York Knicks are looking to get as many pieces as they think they need to succeed, which won’t lead to a reunion with J.R. but could bring in another player with Cleveland ties. According to Sam Amico from Fox Sports, the Knicks have interest in Norris Cole but aren’t  lock to sign him.

The Cavaliers had interest in Cole last season, as he’s an Ohio native whom LeBron James has been fond of in the past. There’s no place for him in Cleveland though, and there really isn’t that much interest in him elsewhere. Detroit was briefly interested before acquiring Reggie Jackson from the Thunder while the Miami Heat have no interest despite needing guard depth.

New Orleans has the rights to match whatever offer Cole gets, and the Knicks aren’t likely to blow him away with a Godfather offer.

The Knicks acquired Jerian “Jerkin” Grant on a Draft Day trade with the Wizards and Hawks, and while they don’t have a ton of depth behind the rookie there’s not a huge need to overpay for Cole. Still, with the team as on the rocks as it is, learning to walk again now that it’s being rehabilitated with young talent, adding Cole wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.

But like most things having to do with the Knicks, just because they want it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.
