David De Gea’s transfer to Real Madrid looks to be off after paperwork wasn’t filed before the deadline

Reports early on Monday leading up to the transfer deadline seemed to have goalkeeper David De Gea headed for La Liga giant Real Madrid from Manchester United. With a 29-million Euro fee established and United also receiving keeper Keylor Navas from Madrid, the deal seemed like a foregone conclusion. Then the deadline came and everything went belly-up.

According to ESPN FC, the paperwork for De Gea didn’t arrive at the Spanish league office prior to the deadline of midnight local time; meaning that the deal isn’t happening and that De Gea will be staying at Old Trafford. Likewise, the paperword for Navas never arrived with the Premier League offices. Essentially, all of the hustle and bustle from earlier in the day was all for naught.

The reasons why the paperwork for De Gea was never filed remain uncertain at this time. The keeper’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2016 when he can leave Old Trafford on free transfer and De Gea has turned down lucrative extension offers from Man U in recent months. For that reason, it’s hard to imagine United purposefully not filing the paperwork to try and keep him.

De Gea has yet to make an appearance since the preseason for United. One has to wonder whether his remaining with the club will change that or if they will keep him out of the starting XI until the transfer window reopens in January.

What we do know now is that De Gea won’t be going to La Liga just yet and we can assume that he still doesn’t want to remain with United long-term. As has been the case throughout the whole De Gea saga since the end of the 2014-15 Premier League season, things only continue to get stranger.
