The Philadelphia Eagles experimented with Tim Tebow — and to the shock of us all it worked.

When the Philadelphia Eagles signed Tim Tebow out of pseudo-retirement this summer, it was a move that opened up Chip Kelly to endless and completely easy trolls. It was warranted at the time, but now something else is warranted — acknowledgment that Kelly’s plan might have been genius.

On Friday, the Eagles dealt Matt Barkley to the Arizona Cardinals which meant one thing — Tim Tebow had made the Eagles roster as the third quarterback.

That’s right the second — well, fourth — coming of Tim Tebow has arrived but it appears that things might be different this time around as opposed to the other attempts he made to make it in the NFL. Tebow is in a situation where there is no pressure for him to start or even backup in Philly, but he’s leaving fans and critics with an interesting taste in their mouths after his thrilling preseason performances.

Of course, this could all be a case of overreacting about a fourth string quarterback playing well against fourth string players, but Tim Tebow seems to be a little more special than that. In his previous outings before arriving to Philly, it seemed that Tebow was succeeding mostly due to luck rather than skill.

But even though it was against third and fourth stringers this preseason, Tebow looked good — which is something he hasn’t looked since he was playing at Florida. He was making tight throws, creating plays and leaning on great decision making to get things flowing on offense.

Now, this doesn’t mean he’s going to be leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl — even if that’s the perfect troll situation for everyone who hates Chip Kelly and Tebow. But he has a roster spot with the Eagles for the 2015 season, which is something no one saw coming. Furthermore, what we didn’t see coming was Tebow actually earning that roster spot with skillful play in the preseason.

All of this could end up being another mirage, but at the end of the day Tebow is back and it looks like he might be a different quarterback from the last time we saw him. When he steps on the field is going to be entirely up to Chip Kelly, but he’s the kind of level of insane that he might feature Tebow more than we think in specialty packages.

That could also be the pitfall in reviving Tebow’s career. The fallback is to put him in special packages — which never works with anyone. The Wildcat offense was cute for a few minutes until everyone figured out how one-dimensional it is. But what if Kelly goes with an evolution of the Tom Landry quarterback pitching rotation and he throws a combo of Bradford-Sanchez-Tebow out on the field to not only keep the pace up but confuse defenses struggling to keep up?

While the Tebow Packages are cliche and lame, Chip Kelly might just be insane enough to make it all work. No matter what, we’re going to get to see this year as Tim Tebow is back.
