With the conclusion of the MLB regular season just around the corner, we take a look at some of the biggest surprises of 2015.

Every year, Major League Baseball has its share of surprises and disappointments.

The 2015 season has been no different.

One of the biggest disappointments of the MLB season has been the Boston Red Sox, who have fallen flat on their face after spending $245 million this offseason. Another team that has failed to meet expectations is the reigning World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, who have free-fallen out of playoff contention during the final two months of the season.

But for each disappointment is a team that comes out of nowhere and shocks the MLB community.

Sometimes it’s a team returning to prominence after years of mediocrity. Other times, it is a talented squad that wins the trade deadline and makes an improbable midseason turnaround.

The National League has been fairly predictable for the most part, with the usual suspects taking control of their respective divisions. Even the New York Mets, who last made the playoffs in 2006, were expected to be a major player in the National League East this season.

The American League has been a different story, filled with unexpected contenders and constant shakeups in the playoff picture.

With the end of the MLB regular season just three weeks away, here is a look at the five biggest surprises in 2015.
