Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Clemson Tigers

The Clemson Tigers are coming off of a massive, albeit narrow, victory last week that vaulted them into the top-10 after a 4-0 start. They’ll welcome Justin Thomas and a hungry Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets team angry over dropping to 2-3 on the season to Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a huge ACC matchup. Deshaun Watson, Wayne Gallman and the rest of Dabo Swinney’s Tigers will need to stay focused to avoid an in-conference upset come Saturday.

Keys to Victory

For the Yellow Jackets to come into Clemson and pull of the upset on Saturday, they are going to have to run their patented triple option more effectively than they have over their past two games, both of which were not coincidentally losses. Against Duke two weeks ago, Georgia Tech managed just 2.9 yards per carry on 60 carries. They followed that up against North Carolina by averaging a mere 4.2 yards per carry against a Tar Heels team that had been gashed by the run in previous weeks. If the Yellow Jackets aren’t getting the ball moving through the triple option, they aren’t going to have a chance at knocking off Clemson.

As for the Tigers, they obviously want to stay on track for having a shot at the College Football Playoff by picking up another win. Their biggest enemy in this game is going to be complacency. Coming off of a big primetime win over Notre Dame last week, Clemson has to avoid a major letdown game against Georgia Tech. They must come out and match the fire that the Yellow Jackets are almost surely going to be playing with. If they come out flat, Georgia Tech has the talent that can put away the Tigers.

Prediction

Though it’s exactly what the Tigers need to avoid, I can see them coming out a little flat early on in this game. However, at home I think Clemson will be able to get the crowd into the game and eventually get up for the task. When that happens, it should be the Tigers rolling to victory.
