The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns squared off in the Red River Rivalry on Saturday

The No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns met at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas for their annual Red River Rivalry game. It is far and away one of the best and most unique college football games in the country and always brings a certain amount of intensity.

The Sooners have been tremendous this season and looked poised to walk all over the Longhorns, but things never seem to be that easy in rivalry games. The Sooners were flat coming out of the gates and the Longhorns rushed out to a 14-o lead.

A short pass from Jerrod Heard to Marcus Johnson got the scoring started, but the Sooners inability to tackle played a large part in that touchdown. Tyrone Swoopes added a touchdown on a short run on the following drive after recovering  a turnover.

Oklahoma scored a touchdown when Baker Mayfield found Dimitri Flowers for  a two-yard pass on the rollout. That narrowed the gap to seven points, but the Longhorns responded a couple of drives later to extend the lead to 14 points once again.

D’Onta Foreman was the big star on that drive breaking off an 81-yard run to set up the touchdown a couple of plays later. Tyrone Swoopes found Caleb Bluiett for a short two-yard touchdown pass.

The Sooners seemed to find the fight they lacked earlier in the game and responded with a touchdown drive to keep the game within one score. The Longhorns regained their first-half form to slow down Oklahoma’s offense and sack Baker Mayfield a couple of times for big losses.

The Longhorns offense came out and iced the game after that, marching down the field. Icing the game by running out the clock.

Three stars

  1. Jerrod Heard, QB, Texas – Without a shadow of a doubt, Heard was the star of the game. He completed 8 of 10 passes for 53 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 21 times for 115 yards.
  2. D’Onta Foreman, RB, Texas – Foreman got the majority of his 117 yards on a single 81-yard play, but that play was vital to Texas thwarting a surging Oklahoma.
  3. Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma – Mayfield was sacked a few times to cost the Sooners, but he was pretty efficient. He completed 20-of-28 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown. He also had a big scramble to keep a touchdown drive alive late in the game.

Highlights

Jerrod Heard threw a screen pass to Marcus Johnson, which he scored by breaking through basically all of Oklahoma’s defense.

Texas marched down the field and got a touchdown on a short Tyrone Swoopes run.

Oklahoma looked like they were going to get Texas cornered with a big defensive stop, but D’Onta Foreman went off for an 81-yard run to dash those hopes.

Next Week

The Sooners head out on the road to Kansas State to take on a formidable Wildcats team. The Longhorns have a bye week and then resume action in two weeks when they welcome, who else, the Kansas State Wildcats to Austin.
