The United States and Mexico clashed at the Rose Bowl to determine who would represent CONCACAF in the 2017 Confederations Cup.

A spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup was on the line when the United States men’s national team and Mexico stepped onto the Rose Bowl field. The tournament is a year before the 2018 World Cup, both tournaments being played in Russia, and serves as a valuable warm up to soccer’s biggest tournament.

On top of the stakes on the line in the game, the rivalry between the United States and Mexico promised a tense and exciting game.

It didn’t take long for the action to get started when Javier Hernandez, aka Chicharito, scored in the 10th minute. It was his first goal for Mexico against the United States.

It took just six minutes for the United States to level the game when a Michael Bradley cross found Geoff Cameron’s forehead.

Shortly into the second half, Chicharito had a chance to give Mexico the lead but whiffed on an open net. The game would end up going to extra time, the United States lucky to get a no-call on a Matt Besler handball.

Unfortunately for the United States, they seemed to tire in the second half while Mexico appeared to be better conditioned.

Early in the first period of extra time, Oribe Peralta scored to give Mexico a 2-1 lead. A beautiful ball over the defense found Paul Aguilar, who was able to get a foot on it and get the ball across the box to Peralta.

As the United States tried to find a goal to tie the game, they continued to make errors and give the ball away. Earlier in the second half the United States found what they were looking for.

Bobby Wood, who came on as a substitution, scored a goal from the middle of the box after a beautiful through ball from DeAndre Yedlin, who also came on as a substitution.

Michael Bradley was on a big run and got the ball in the center of the field about 30 yards out. Mexico’s Héctor Herrera collided with him and took him down setting up a free kick in a dangerous position.

Clint Dempsey took the kick and it went right into the wall.

All the momentum the United States gained was lost when Mexico’s Paul Aguilar scored in the 118th minute to give Mexico a 3-2 lead. A set piece created some chaotic play and a ball over the top found Aguilar who booted a beautiful shot past Brad Guzan.

With not enough time to generate any quality chances, Mexico clung on to win. They’ll head to Russia for the 2017 Confederation Cup.

Three stars

  1. Oribe Peralta, F, Mexico – Peralta scored in the 96th minute in the first period of extra time to give Mexico a 2-1 lead. Peralta also played a key role in Chicharito’s goal.
  2. Bobby Wood, M, USA – Wood came on as a substitute and scored a big goal in the second period of extra time to tie the game.
  3. Paul Aguilar, D, Mexico – Scored the game-winning goal off a lobbed in ball with an incredible strike.
