England legend and current Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder, Steven Gerrard, suggested that the 2016 MLS season could very well be his last.

After 17 seasons in the Premier League and a half-season in Major League Soccer, it is difficult to imagine the beautiful game without Steven Gerrard. But when the Los Angeles Galaxy were eliminated from the MLS postseason by the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field, the Englishman suggested to reporters that he could be hanging up his boots for good at the end of the 2016 campaign.

"“It could be my last season as a footballer. … I certainly don’t want to feel like I’m feeling right now come next year,” Gerrard told reporters in Seattle last week. “I’d love to go out on a high. It’s a long season and I only came here for the last four months, but I’ll certainly be better for the experience next year.”"

After finishing the 2014-2015 Premier League with the only side he’s ever played for, Liverpool, Gerrard opted to make the move across the pond and ply his trade in Los Angeles for the Galaxy. Along with reuniting with former Liverpool teammate and last year’s MLS MVP, Robbie Keane, Gerrard was soon joined by Mexican international, Giovani dos Santos, as well.

While Los Angeles won an historic fifth MLS Cup in 2014, they were not able to match the feat this year. Despite bringing in big names to replace Landon Donovan, the Galaxy weren’t even able to get past the first round.

After the disappointment in Seattle, Gerrard made it pretty clear he has his mind set on retirement after 2016, but he sure doesn’t want to go out with a whimper either.

"“Knowing this club and looking at it from the outside, I know that we’ll try to improve in certain areas,” Gerrard said. “We’ll improve the squad, and we’ll hopefully have a [team] that’s ready to compete again next year.”"
