The Vikings edged out the Rams in overtime despite losing Teddy Bridgewater

21. 60. 18. 51. Final

In a game billed as the matchup between two of the NFL’s best running backs in Adrian Peterson and Todd Gurley, the Week 9 matchup between the St. Louis Rams and Minnesota Vikings was marred by an injury to Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater after taking a cheap shot while trying to slide. Bridgewater was out cold for quite a while on the field before leaving the game and being evaluated for a concussion.

In terms of the actual game, this one was unsurprisingly a grind-it-out affair between two of the league’s best defenses. Both teams heavily relied on their running attacks, which is what we expected with Gurley and Peterson both being in action. Peterson, Bridgewater, and Gurley each scored a rushing touchdown for the only trips to the end zone in regulation while the rest of the scoring came in the kicking game. It was the kicking game that let down the Rams late in the fourth quarter as Greg Zuerlein, who hit a 61-yard field goal earlier in the game, missed a 48-yard attempt that would have tied the game.

The Rams got the ball back after the missed field goal after a big defensive stop and using their three remaining timeouts. They got the ball back with 1:14 remaining in the game and 61 yards to go. Thanks to a couple solid throws from Nick Foles and a costly defensive pass interference penalty, Zuerlein got another chance to tie it up from 53 yards out. He converted on this try to send the game into overtime.

The Rams got the ball to start the overtime period, but only managed to lose six yards on the drive before having to punt. After a big return from Marcus Sherels that gave them good field position, the Vikings only needed a small chunk of yardage to get into field goal range. Peterson and company managed that and Blair Walsh sailed the game-winner through the uprights from 40 yards out.

Three stars

Adrian Peterson showed up in this big NFC matchup in a big way. All Day finished the contest with 29 carries for 125 yards and a score along with two catches for 18 yards.

Todd Gurley showed up big for the Rams in this game, despite getting off to a slow start. The rookie stud finished Sunday with 24 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown to go with three catches for 20 yards.

Linval Joseph was big on the Vikings defense in this game as the big defensive tackle recorded 10 tackles, half of a sack, and three tackles for loss on the day.

Highlights

Odds

The Vikings were two-loin favorites in this game, which they covered with the win on the field goal. The two teams combined to just barely hit the under on the 40-point over/under.

Next Week

St. Louis will be back home next week as they face another NFC North opponent in the Chicago Bears.

The Vikings will be on the road in another tough matchup next week as they’ll be in the Bay Area taking on the Oakland Raiders.
