After having an epic beard, New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has finally shaved it.

Every sport has their epic beards, and few were as iconic in the NFL as the beard of the New York Jets’ Ryan Fitzpatrick. With a giant beard that would make the most ardent of pirates proud, Fitzpatrick stepped on the field every week looking like something out of a Herman Melville novel.

For this Captain Ahab may have been doing his best to lead the Jets on an impossible journey in the AFC East, but at least he had his epic beard with him to show that he is the captain of his ship.

Now that beard is no more.

On Wednesday, Fitzpatrick finally did the most dastardly of deeds, when he decided to finally trim his beard. To say trim, is probably a massive understatement. That big mass of inspiration of hair is all but gone, much like the Jets’ AFC East chances in 2015.

By shaving the beard, Fitzpatrick looked like a young man again.

Look at the look in those eyes. It’s as if he’s watching himself just shave his pride away. Not too many fair-haired individuals could grow a beard quite as well as the one Fitzpatrick did, so pardon the melancholy feeling for seeing something as artistic as the fur on his face be swept into oblivion by a cheap janitor’s broom.

It didn’t have to be this way. It didn’t have to.
